Interdependence of Discoveries and Inventions The growing interdependence of science (conceived as a theoretical structure devised by man in order to explain the functioning of the natural universe) and technology (considered as man’s effort to control and utilize the physical environment) has created dispute as to the exact relationships between science and technology in the matter of discoveries and inventions. Until relatively recently, scientific discoveries formed part of the philosophical tradition; they had little to do with technology except where the development of scientific instruments provided basic data upon which scientists could construct new theories. Technology for the most part belonged to the craft tradition, with most technological advances resulting from purely empirical, trial-and-error methods. Although scholars might agree on the independence of both science and technology in the past, there is no agreement among them in regard to the relative roles of science and technology during the past century and a half and in the contemporary world. Some scholars claim that the two are still independent of one another, that basic scientific formulations arise from human curiosity to unravel the secrets of the physical world and that science proceeds with an internal dynamism of its own which owes little or nothing to the social and economic motivations which inspire much new technology; similarly, it is claimed that most inventions are either quite independent of science or, at its most, appendages. Contrasted with this view of the almost absolute independence of both science and technology is that held by many scholars which claims that all modern technology is an outgrowth of science, indeed, defining technology as simply applied science.
