CASE STUDY FOR JAY-PAC BATTERY POWERED-PORTABLE MAGNETIC PARTICLE TEST KIT 1. Magnetic Particle Testing: is done on mostly carbon steel for detecting cracks on the surface. This is widely used in Shipyards, refineries and all other places where steel fabrication is done. It is also in great demand in the plant maintenance of running plants. 2. The Equipment: Consists of a handheld Electromagnetic Yoke which gets its power from 220/110 volts A/C mains supply point. The yoke magnetizes a small area on the part being tested and fine iron particles mixed in hydrocarbon based liquid carrier are sprayed on the magnetized area. The iron particles accumulate at the crack location and form a distinct indication of the crack. 3. Conventional Kit: In the conventional system, the power supply is taken from A/C mains. This leads to the following requirements: a) Power supply point has to be arranged near the test location. This is a major concern especially in shipyards and big plants as the test location may be very far from the supply point. At times cables of length 20 to 50 meters are required to be laid down. b) This again becomes a job in itself as stringent cable laying rules need to followed and safety approvals sought, even before starting the job. c) If the test locations are scattered, the cable has to be relocated frequently. d) At times jobs with higher priority need us to stop our job and lend the cable or supply points to other operatives. e) For every pair of testing technicians at least one additional man is required for cable management itself. f) Testing is at times required in remote locations where no power supply is available. Portable generators are used in such locations 4. Proposed Kit: All the problems associated with above power supply can be cut down if we use the newly introduced JAY-PACK Battery Powered Magnetic Particle Test kit. Here the power source being a small battery and inverter, which can be carried on the belt of a person, the technician can start the testing immediately on reaching the site. A 110 V A/C yoke can be connected to the outlet and it’s ready to use for testing. This will give the following advantages ( as experienced in last three jobs ie, Sky Tower at Santosa, Shutdown at Keppel Merlimau and a job in the anchorage area): a) b) c) d)
100% saving on the long extension cables. 100% savings on cable management At least 30% saving on the manpower. Increase in efficiency of testing by more than 50% as the technician can concentrate on the job and move freely between different test locations.
