El estudio que se publica en el número de febrero de la prestigiosa revista Molecular Cell, explica como la obesidad y la diabetes predisponen a padecer cánceres tan comunes como el de colon o tan fulminantes como el de páncreas, y desvela los cambios inducidos en la β-catenina por los excesos de azúcar y las enzimas responsables para que aumente nuestro riesgo de padecer cáncer. Así, los científicos, dirigidos por la Dra. Custodia García Jiménez, han encontrado que los mecanismos moleculares por los que los altos niveles de azúcar anormales aumentan la proliferación celular, son los mismos en células tumorales de intestino delgado, mama, ovario, páncreas, colon u otros, abriendo, ante estas evidencias, nuevas vías para el desarrollo de estrategias (de prevención y terapéuticas) encaminadas a

reducir el riesgo de cáncer en la población.



Los resultados preliminares del estudio mas grande del mundo acerca del papel de la dieta en el desarrollo del cáncer confirman una relación entre el consumo de carnes rojas y el cáncer colorectal El Doctor Elio Riboli, investigador de la Agencia Internacional para la Investigación del Cáncer, quién dirige el estudio dice "esta relación era la que nosotros esperabamos encontrar". Los datos preliminares mostraron que el consumo de carne roja esta asociada de manera significativa con un riego elevado de tumores intestinales. Entre 385 pacientes con cáncer colorectal, el riesgo de cáncer se aumento en un 40% en sujetos con mayor consumo de carne, mientras que el riesgo se disminuyó en un 40% en los sujetos con mayor consumo de vegetales.

Klotz  Abstract  As one of the most prevalent cancers, prostate cancer has enormous public health significance and prevention strategies would attenuate its economic, emotional, physical and social impact. Until recently, however, we have had only modest information about risk factors for this disease, apart from the well-established characteristics of age, family history and place of birth. The large worldwide variation in the incidence of prostate cancer and the increased risk in migrants who move from low-risk to high-risk countries provide strong for modifiable environmental factors, particularly diet, in its etiology. Thus, dietary agents have gained considerable attention as chemopreventive agents against prostate cancer. Dietary fat, red and processed meat, vitamin E, selenium, tomatoes, cruciforms and green tea have all been linked with the development and aggressiveness of prostate cancer, through a range of molecular mechanisms. The direction of future clinical trials lies in clarifying the effects of these agents and exploring the biological mechanisms responsible for the prevention of prostate cancer. However, owing to the short time period between diagnosis and treatment, conventional dietary intervention techniques are not always realistic. Until large randomized trials confirm the benefit of chemopreventive and dietary modifications, patients can be advised to pursue a diet and lifestyle that enhances overall health. 

Role of diet in cancer incidence in Hawaii. Kolonel LN, Nomura AM, Hinds MW, Hirohata T, Hankin JH, Lee J. Abstract Incidence rates for many sites of cancer show wide variations among the main ethnic groups in Hawaii (Caucasians, Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos, and Hawaiians). Major shifts in cancer rates among migrants to the islands suggest that environmental factors are at least in part responsible for these variations. One prominent area of difference among these ethnic populations is their diets, which can vary substantially, not only in the consumption of particular food items but also in mean nutrient intakes. In aggregate correlational analyses based on data from representative samples of these ethnic groups and corresponding populationbased cancer incidence rates, we found significant associations between ethnic-sex-specific intakes of dietary fat (including total fat, as well as animal, saturated, and unsaturated fats) and breast, endometrial, and prostate cancers. Animal protein intake showed associations similar to those for dietary fat, but these two nutrients were highly correlated in the data. Cholesterol intake showed significant correlations with lung and laryngeal cancers. Analyses of both nutrient and food item data suggested an association of stomach cancer incidence with the consumption of fish products, particularly dried/salted fish, and with a lower intake of vitamin C. Preliminary findings from ongoing case-control studies showed the following relationships: an inverse association between lung cancer risk and the intake of food sources of vitamin A, especially foods containing carotenes; an inverse association between cancers of the lower urinary tract and vitamin A consumption, especially from supplements; a positive association between prostate cancer risk and dietary fat intake in men above age 69, but not in younger men; and a positive association between breast cancer risk and the intake of dietary fat (particularly saturated fat) and animal protein in postmenopausal women, especially the Japanese. Two large cohorts (50,000 and 5,000 subjects) on whom dietary information was collected between 1975 and 1980 are being followed prospectively for their occurrence of cancer.

Curcumin (feruylmethane), a natural plant product, possesses such chemopreventive activity, but the mechanisms by which it prevents cancer growth are not well understood. In the present study, we examined the mechanisms by which curcumin treatment affects the growth of colon cancer cells in vitro. Results showed that curcumin treatment causes p53- and p21independent G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis in HCT116(p53+/+), HCT-116(p53-/-) and HCT-116(p21-/-) cell lines. We further investigated the association of the -catenin-mediated cMyc expression and the cell-cell adhesion pathways in curcumin-induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis in HCT-116 cells



Prostate cancer: Cohort studies in the Netherlands (4), United States (5), and Europe (6) have examined a wide range of daily cruciferous vegetable intakes and found little or no association with prostate cancer risk. However, some case-control studies have found that people who ate greater amounts of cruciferous vegetables had a lower risk of prostate cancer (7, 8).



Colorectal cancer: Cohort studies in the United States and the Netherlands have generally found no association between cruciferous vegetable intake and colorectal cancer risk (911). The exception is one study in the Netherlands—the Netherlands Cohort Study on Diet and Cancer—in which women (but not men) who had a high intake of cruciferous vegetables had a reduced risk of colon (but not rectal) cancer (12).



Lung cancer: Cohort studies in Europe, the Netherlands, and the United States have had varying results (13-15).
