Course Description The course allows learners to acquire knowledge about the properties of light and concepts on electromagnetism. It will also provide knowledge about the mechanisms behind homeostasis, the structure of DNA, the variations among organisms, and the ecosystems. Lastly, the course will touch on the behavior of gases in different conditions, the different types of biomolecules and their structure, and the fundamental principles behind chemical reactions. Course Objectives At the end of the summer program, the Bridging the Gap 2016 beneficiaries should be able to: [1] Recall concepts on the properties of light and electromagnetism [2] Determine the images formed by different types of mirrors and lenses [3] Describe the parts and functions of the different organ systems that work together to achieve homeostasis [4] Explain the structure of DNA, the occurrence of evolution, and relationship among different living organisms [5] Do calculations using relationships provided by the gas laws and explain the relationships using the Kinetic Molecular Theory [6] Identify whether a biomolecule is a carbohydrate, lipid, protein, or nucleic acid [7] Recognize the chemical reactions associated with biological and industrial processes affecting life and the environment COURSE OUTLINE Day and Number of Hours
