DARK SOULS – The Board Game
Git Gud , Unpredictable Enemies and Tiered Treasure -variants
These variant rules alter those rules from the official rule book that I personally found lacking. The goal in creating these variants was to keep the changes as simple as possible, and to avoid making the game significantly more complicated than it officially is. The result is a set of house rules that makes the game setup a little more complicated, but only adds a few quick die rolls to the overall flow of the game. The variants are separate from each other, allowing only one or two of them to be used if the others seem unnecessary or bad. The Tiered Treasure -variant is meant only for single (non-campaign) games. One standard 6-sided die is needed for the Unpredictable Enemies -variant.
DzGit Guddz If the party completes an encounter without using any Luck, Heroic Ability or Estus Flask -tokens, place a token or a marker of your choice on top of the encounter card (this is just a reminder for the completion). Later, if the same encounter is completed again without having to use any tokens, you may remove that encounter card from the map (leave terrain on the tile). On future sparks, the party may automatically complete these empty encounters, gaining the soul reward without actually entering combat.
Unpredictable Enemies When an enemy is about to move on its own accord, and it has several equally valid nodes to choose from, roll the die to randomize the movement instead of freely choosing the node. All other movement rules are unchanged, including pushes. If an enemy is pushed, you can freely choose the push direction. Each enemy resolves their movement decisions separately, so if multiple enemies of the same type share a node, they may spread out when they leave the node.
As an example, the following system can be used for quick randomization: When there are two possible nodes to choose from: 1-3 = left 4-6 = right When there are three possible nodes to choose from: 1-2 = left 3-4 = middle 5-6 = right
Tiered Treasure DURING SETUP, create three separate treasure decks instead of a single big one. The decks are kept face down, but always make sure that you know which deck is which. When creating the decks, follow through these steps: 1. Separate the four Titanite Shard and four Ember -cards from the other Common Treasure cards and shuffle them together into a face down stack (hereafter known as the ͞Upgrade Stack͟). 2. From the other Common Treasure and non-transposed Class Treasure of the chosen characters, take those that have their highest stat requirement 21 or less. Add 3 cards from the ͞Upgrade Stack͟ and shuffle. This is the deck of TIER 1 treasure (it should contain 31/32/33/34 cards). 3. Take the rest of the Common Treasure and non-transposed Class Treasure of the chosen characters. Add 4 cards from the ͞Upgrade Stack͟ and shuffle. This is the deck of TIER 2 treasure (it should contain 33/37/41/45 cards). 4. Choose 5 Legendary Treasure at random and without looking at them. Add all the Transposed Treasure of the chosen characters. Add the last card from the ͞Upgrade Stack͟ and shuffle. This is the deck of TIER 3 treasure (it should contain 11/16/21/26 cards). At the beginning of the game, only TIER 1 deck is kept on the bonfire tile, and cards may be purchased from this deck only. The other decks are kept somewhere close. When the party completes their first level 2 encounter, TIER 2 deck is moved onto the bonfire tile, but it will still be kept separated from the TIER 1 cards. Now cards may be purchased from either of the decks. The same goes for TIER 3 treasure when a level 3 encounter is completed.
The prices for purchasing treasure from Blacksmith Andre depend on the treasure tier number: 1 soul for a TIER 1 treasure 2 souls for a TIER 2 treasure 3 souls for a TIER 3 treasure
For each treasure chest opened after an encounter, you may choose one of the following: -
Draw one TIER 1 treasure AND one TIER 2 treasure ( You MUST choose this if you haven’t defeated the mini-boss yet ) OR
-
Draw one TIER 3 treasure ( You may choose this only after the mini-boss has been defeated )
